Curtains. Traditional apiaries of western Asturias.

30 Jan 2025 - 23 Mar 2025
The exhibition

The curtains are constructions generally circular or semicircular in shape, where walls and overhangs seem to have served for centuries to keep the hives safe from damage by bears. Although the distribution of these apiaries extends to some areas of Galicia -where they are known as albares o alvarizas-, León, Zamora, Salamanca, Extremadura and Portugal, it is Asturias the region with the highest density of cortinos and a more striking typological richness. It is in the west of the peninsula where the superimposition of a characteristic cultural substratum and the presence of large extensions of heathland seem to condition the presence of these apiaries.

The exhibition consists of 30 photographs, some of high documentary value, and four panels with information on the constructive characteristics, distribution and state of conservation of these apiaries that make up a unique beekeeping architecture in the world. All the texts of the different elements of the exhibition are in Spanish and English.

Of the approximately one thousand apiaries that have been inventoried in Asturias, only a few remain in a good state of conservation, as a result of changes in beekeeping production practices and the abandonment of the mountain areas where they are located. Many of the apiaries illustrated in the photographs of the exhibition do not exist today or are abandoned.

The Cultural Recycler

The Cultural Recycler is a project promoted by the City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN), an entity attached to the Institute for Just Transition (ITJ) and under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which seeks to boost the cultural scene through the reuse and roaming of existing exhibitions.

The purpose of La Recicladora Cultural is to connect national and international cultural entities to convert exhibitions and all the elements that go with them, adapting them to new spaces and creating cultural proposals that can be enjoyed in other places.

Through the recycling and reuse of exhibits, new life is given to ephemeral contents and materials that would otherwise be lost or forgotten in a warehouse. In this way, circularity is promoted and new experiences are created for the public.
