The Open Sky : Photographic exhibition by Miguel Gamart

29 Oct 2024 - 29 Nov 2024

"The Open Sky" is a photographic project that explores the transition of the Ciñera-Matallana mining basin after the closure of the Corta Pastora mine, reflecting the conflict between tradition and future in a community in transformation.

The Exhibition

We invite you to discover the exhibition "The Open Sky", a photographic project by Miguel Gamart that delves into the life of the mining basin of Ciñera-Matallana, in León, after the closure of the Corta Pastora exterior mine. This emblematic enclave, which was one of the economic and cultural engines of the region, ceased operations in 2018, ending an era and marking the beginning of a profound transformation for the community.

"El Cielo Abierto" captures the transition of a territory where mining was central for decades and whose disappearance has triggered an identity and social conflict. Gamart's photographs portray the duality between tradition and progress, industrialization and preservation, past and future, reflecting the challenges faced by communities seeking a new raison d'être.

This work does not intend to position itself in the debate on mining, but to narrate the period of change of a place that, after living with the stability of a solid industry, now faces a new future. In his images, Gamart highlights the connection between people and the environment they occupy, exploring the feeling of belonging in a landscape marked by the absence of an industry that defined the identity and territory of its inhabitants.

The Sangre-Minera association has been a fundamental pillar in the creation of the project, acting as a link between the community and the photographer Miguel Gamart. With a deep knowledge of the region, its members have played the role of guides and social mediators, facilitating the photographer's immersion in the local culture and traditions. Thanks to their support, the project authentically captures the identity and spirit of the Cuenca Minera.

The Artist

Miguel Gamart, a widely recognized photographer, stands out for his ability to portray the essence of communities and their environments. His work has been featured in prominent festivals in Spain, and his recent project on El Cielo Abierto pays visual homage to the history and resilience of this area.

The Cultural Recycler

The exhibition is promoted by The Cultural Recycler Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in this visual story about life in a mining basin without mining!

The Cultural Recycler is a project promoted by the City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN), under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which seeks to boost the cultural scene through the reuse and roaming of existing exhibitions.

The purpose of La Recicladora Cultural is to connect national and international cultural entities to convert exhibitions and all the elements that go with them, adapting them to new spaces and creating cultural proposals that can be enjoyed in other places. Through the recycling and reuse of exhibitions, new life is given to ephemeral contents and materials that would otherwise be lost or forgotten in a warehouse. In this way, circularity is promoted and new experiences are created for the public.
