Ibera Auri : KASSIANI : Between East and West

Sunday, April 28, 2024

The name of the program honors Kassia of Constantinople, the first composer in the history of music whose works have been preserved to this day.

The program presented in this project focuses on the pioneers - the first female composers of our era. Thus, we revive the works composed by Kassia of Constantinople, Hildegard von Bingen and the Codex Las Huelgas.

Kassia of Constantinople takes us back to the 9th century in the East, specifically to the Byzantine Empire. Her legacy has reached our days through her hymnic compositions, which are still performed today in the Orthodox liturgy -a fact that no other woman has achieved. The work of this abbess of Constantinople has endured for more than a thousand centuries, becoming a symbol for the Orthodox Church.

With the songs of Hildegard von Bingen's compositions we move to the West. Pioneer in the field of musical composition, being the first Western woman whose works have been preserved. Mystic, composer, writer, theologian, philosopher, artist and composer.

This multifaceted nun of the 12th century offers us a musical work different from that of all her contemporaries. Her lack of musical instruction distances her from the compositional practices of the time. In the female Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas (Burgos) there is one of the most important medieval manuscripts of the Middle Ages: El códex las Huelgas, s.

XIV. This codex is one of the few that are preserved in its place of origin, having been used for the canticles in the divine offices of this community of cloistered nuns. In its interior there are monodic and polyphonic compositions, gathering repertoire of the Ars Antiqua and the Ars Nova in the same compendium.

With this program we invite the public to travel through time and our ancestral Mediterranean culture.

Ibera Auri's performance is part of the Dinamiz-ARTj program promoted by the Institute for Just Transition (ITJ) and the City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN) to boost cultural activity in municipalities affected by the closure of mining and thermal and nuclear power plants and to promote the careers of young artists living in these territories.
